"10 Count" featuring "The Big Beef" Jake Garvin

This week on "10 Count", we head to Louisville and meet up with
"The Big Beef" Jake Garvin.
"The Big Beef" Jake Garvin
Garvin made his debut almost two years ago after training with Apollo Garvin, Dave Crist and The Hooligans.
1. What made you start/choose wrestling?

It's what I've wanted to do my whole entire life. I wasn't doing anything I ever dreamt of so I decided to suck up my fears and give it a shot.

2. Did you enjoy wrestling as a kid? If so, your favorites (workers, territories, promotions, venues, etc) and why.

I loved wrestling as a kid. I'm only 22 so I missed out on the territory's so most of my viewing was either OVW (in person) or WWE but my favorite for sure was Mid South. Mid South is my favorite because they had this presence about them. Everyone top to bottom was so complete. You can learn from any and everyone. As a kid my favorite workers were Benoit, Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko, and Triple H. I think these guys were my favorite because they all seemed tough and legit.

3. Biggest influence on your career so far?

Biggest influence on my career so far has to be The Hooligans; Devin and Mason Cutter.
They have taught me to hit the road and not to be afraid or not to be down on myself if I screw up. They give me the best advice and always have my best interest in mind. They are my best friends.

4. If someone has never seen wrestle you, what is the first thing that you would tell them about yourself?

I'm the Big Beef, I'm brash, arrogant and I plan on winning. I'm hard hitting and legit.

5. What/who influenced your ring style?

Guys like Terry Gordy, Steve Williams, Arn Anderson influenced my in ring style. There"s a lot of depth to me. I take a lot of inspiration outside of wrestling and pull it into who I am. Matt Healy from The 1975 is a huge inspiration of mine. I'm very influenced by Hardcore and Punk music because that was my upbringing.

6. Pick on wrestler/team/manager from the past to work with or against and why.

If I had to pick one Wrestler/team/manager I would work with or against....
Wrestler would be Raven. Answer is because he's a genius.
Team would be Road Warriors. Answer is because they rule and I wanna hear that reaction in person.
Manager would be Jim Cornette. He's the man. A lot of people hate him but he can talk asses into seats and that's what a worker loves!

7. What is the plan for Jake Garvin? 2017?

The plan for Jake Garvin with the rest of 2017? As always, continued progress. I want to be better each time I step in a ring. I would like to get in better shape as well. I want gold.

8. Why "The Big Beef"? Where did that nickname originate?

I was wrestling at a festival in Texas called Sound on Sound and the last day got rained out. We were trying to survive the rain and I was down on myself so I asked a friend what he saw in me. He said "You're believable, big and beefy". It clicked and got over so I used it.

9. Best thing about wrestling?

The best thing about wrestling... besides actually wrestling would have to be seeing the country!

10. Why do we need to know Jake Garvin?

I'm different, I bring something new to the ring each match. I'm girth and athleticism embodied. I'm also a very hard worker and very humble. I travel and do things the right way.

Relative Unknown - (Almost) Humble Beginnings

Welcome back to the first legitimate entry in this bit of a series here. Because I am every bit as basic as I seem, I figured we'd start out here with my (almost) beginnings in the wrestling world. Focusing on how I heard about professional wrestling training and some memories about attending my first ever now "home show" ProSouth Wrestling with a bit of a peek as to how big of markskis Mr. Donnie Primetime and myself were (well... still are)

My brother; Donnie (Primetime) and I were taking a leisurely stroll one day in mid-January of 2013 to our local grocery store when we came upon something that caught our eye. This happened to be a ProSouth Wrestling flyer. We snatched it up and took it home because we were lifelong wrestling markskis and completely unaware that there was any wrestling in our area. Donnie was interested in actually wrestling on the show so he found the promotion on Facebook and messaged the page asking if he could wrestle on it (we obviously had no idea how this wrestling thing worked) the promoter asked Donnie to send him some of his work, to which Donnie replied with some of his MMA bouts. The promoter then asked him if he'd like to come to the show that Friday and further dicuss it. (Ol' Carny Ace Haven) He agreed and we buzzed all week.

When Friday came along; Donnie and I, along with our friend John (shoutout to ol JC3), packed up and went. On the way to the show Donnie mentioned how the champ of the promotion looked like he belong to some rip off boy band. He then proceeded to cut a promo on him claiming he'd "MMMBOP his ass all around the arena" We arrived at the arena and we're very impressed and enthralled with the atmosphere of the building. My key memories of the show are as follows:
1. James Hardy got hurt on Tyler Gage's spine buster and I felt really cool when I was able to spot it (I now know that this is a semi-regular occurance so it was nothing special)
2. Steven Michaels was able to hoist up Dakota Outlaw (300+ pound brother) for a GTS and that impressed us tons.
3. A Punk Rock version of "Don't Fear the Reaper" hit and we all immediately agreed we were cheering for whoever came from the curtain because the song was great. Much to Donnie's chagrin, it was ol' Hanson Haven himself. (Ace Haven)
4. Donnie was almost lynched by yelling out "War Eagle" during a fun little "Roll Tide" session Terry Batey had led the crowd in.

After the show we were instructed to stay inside and wait for the promoter. We had a chat with Terry Batey who we had assumed just ran everything at the show considering that's what his "show role" was. We got into a deep conversation about music when the blonde haired champ came into the office and sat down removing his wrestling shoes, to which Terry Batey introduced him as his son and the man that ran everything behind the scenes at ProSouth Wrestling. Shocked would not have even began to describe our reaction to this news. As our (Donnie's, while I sat starstruck) conversation shifted to Ace Haven, it was apparent that this was a really cool brother and he had revealed to Donnie that he couldn't allow him to immediately wrestle but he could train him. Donnie quickly accepted the offer and it was off to the races.

The first couple trainings, I opted to stay at home because I was still pretty enthralled with the whole situation and didn't want to make a fool of myself in front of this goth-damn superstar! Eventually I got up the nerve to come to one of the trainings when Donnie mentioned that Ace was super cool and was interested in meeting me. I was completely beside myself at this point. Donnie loaded up myself and our cousin Daniel to go with him to this training sesh. We we're excited to see Donnie do something we had all dreamed of when we were kids on the trampoline. We filed into the building and at this point it's early February so it's absolutely freezing so we're trying to keep warm anxiously awaiting our inside look on this intriguing business, and that's when Donnie came over to us and told us they were having a "special seminar training" with a gentleman named Kyle Matthews. I was pumped to see this as I had heard a lot about him and nothing but good things. That's when Donnie broke the news to us that we'd have to sit in the car for the duration of this seminar because Kyle doesn't like fans being exposed to the "business." We went out to Donnies van and tried to get comfortable and take a nap or something. It was a little over about two hours before Donnie emerged from the building, and it was on that day that I vowed I would not be sitting in the van anymore, I would HAVE to get into that ring. One way or another.

Yesterday @MattHardyBrand posted the following tweet...
Could this mean that we are about to finally see the return of the Brok-- um... the "WOKEN" gimmick on Monday Night RAW?

OWO Wrestling returns to Amory, Mississippi this SATURDAY NIGHT!!

Relative Unknown - Introduction

Hello ladies and gents. My name is Shean Christopher and I am a professional wrestler of a little over one year. This specific blog is a bit of an introduction  (as you can tell by the title) of myself because I'm sure not very many (if any) of you know who I am. I am of 19 years of age and am knee deep into my 3rd (Going on 4th) year in this absolutely mayhem of a business we call professional wrestling. This might confuse some as I clearly stated earlier I'm a professional wrestler of a little over a year, but as it may surprise nobody, I didn't start out as a good ol' rassler.

In November of 2013, Ace Haven offered me a position on his weekly ProSouth Wrestling show as a ring announcer to which I jumped for joy at the thought of. I loved the position dearly... well, until that time Gene Jackson and I tussled up in the 2014 Battle Rumble. Not for the reason you may have imagined either, because after that slight taste of what actual wrestling was all about, I only craved more of it. Much to my chagrin though, I was actually becoming quite well at this ring announcing gig. I drug through the 2015 calender year, getting little to no actual action(and we're not just talking about wrestling, kids. 😉)

In February of 2016 I finally made my professional wrestling debut and I couldn't be anymore pumped while putting on pretty decent performances in the matches I was getting very early on in my career, I started collecting a bit of a good reputation around the ProSouth locker room. Even to the point where I am now a 4 time Tag Team Champion of my home promotion. These accomplishments mean the world to me (Even so that ol' mark Sheen has a picture of me with the tag strap on my debit card) but I'm ready to get and branch out to the world and show them what I can do (or can't) inside the squared circle.

Everyone always hears the stories and hilarity of the careers of the vets in the business, but what about us Greenhorns, huh? That's what I'm here to do. Give you guys a bit of a different approach to the wrestling documentary we all love to read. In my short tenure I've encountered some great and not so great people and experiences and I'm going to let you guys in on this over the course of the next several monthskis.
